One of the most common new year’s goals is the goal to “lose weight” and “get in shape.” Have you ever told your friends and family that these are your goals?

The problem is, that it is hard to stick to these goals. So many people talk about their failed resolutions, how can we make 2015 different from all of the previous years?

The new year is a time of reflection for most people. We evaluate our year and decide on the changes that we want to make. After a season of holiday parties, cake, cookies and candy, it’s no surprise that we think of losing weight with the coming new year.

1) Write Down Your New Year’s Goals

The first step to successfully lose weight in 2015 is to write down your goals. When you can see the goals that you set for yourself, it will help keep you motivated. What are your new year’s resolutions?

“I want to lose 10 pounds.”

“I want to start exercising 3 times a week.”

“I want to start eating healthy.”

Any of these goals are a great start. Be sure to write them down.

2) Set Specific and Realistic Weight Loss Goals

We need to set realistic weight loss goals for ourselves. If our goals are unrealistic, we may expect immediate results and when we don’t see them, we can get discouraged and stop trying. Achieving your new year’s goals will take a little bit of time.

Always remember though, the changes that you are making now are going to change your entire life. The more specific our weight loss goals are, the easier it will be to accomplish them. Give your goals a date that you want to accomplish them by.

“I want to lose 10 pounds in 30 days.”

“I want to start exercising every morning for 17 minutes.”

Plan out your new meals, set aside time for exercise, make changes to your current habits and you will develop new ones that will change you!

5) Keep a Journal and Track Your Progress

Keep a journal to track how far you’ve come. If you are starting a new diet in 2015, and have decided to eat healthy, keep a food journal of everything that you eat. If you do this, you will be able to look back and see exactly what you’re eating, and if you can improve. 

6) Use the Buddy System

Have a friend who wants to lose weight for new year’s too? Do it together! Everything is better if you do it with a friend! Using the buddy system will also help keep you more accountable in your goals if you ever get off track.

7) Don’t Be Too Hard on Yourself

Everyone slips up from time to time. You really wanted that giant slice of cheesecake for dessert or you took a trip to your favorite fast food place. It’s ok. One mistake doesn’t have to derail your entire diet.

The odds are it won’t affect you very much at all in terms of becoming more healthy and losing weight in the long run. Don’t let a little mistake kill your momentum and derail you off of achieving your new year’s goals!

8) Stay Positive and Believe You Can Do it

You must believe that you can do this. It doesn’t matter how often you have failed in the past; your past does not equal your future. What matters now is focusing on what you want, identifying what you need to get it and taking action. Your health and happiness are important, so stand strong. 

Stay Healthy for Life

Don’t just set the goal to “get in shape in 2015” or “lose weight in 2015” make it your goal to get healthy and stay healthy for life. That should be your ultimate goal. Make 2015 the year to start. Make 2015 the best year of your life!
