5 Ways to Jumpstart Your Metabolism

Metabolism is how your body changes the nutrients in the food and drink you consume into energy. And energy is essential for your body to function on every level.

As you get older, your metabolism slows down. So, you want to do everything you can to fuel its fires and keep it going strong. The faster your metabolism is, the more energy you have and the better your body can process nutrients.

These 5 tips will jumpstart your metabolism, help you avoid diet plateaus and feel more energetic than ever.

Tip #1 – Eat Breakfast Every Day

Your mom always told you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. She was right… again!

I recommend eating within 30 minutes of waking up.  This will jolt your metabolism out of its “rest” mode and into “burn” mode.

If you skip it, you’re basically asking your body to store calories as fat because it’s preparing for the worst-case scenario: no food!

Plus, it’s just common sense that you’re more likely to overdo it at your next meal if you let yourself go hungry for too long.

Tip #2 – Strike a Balance With Lean Protein

You tend to burn more calories during the digestion of proteins.

Do your best to get about 1/3 of your daily calories from lean proteins like chicken breasts, lean turkey, lean beef, tofu, etc.

Your metabolism will thank you.

Tip #3 – Maintain a Sleep Routine

If you don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis, your metabolism won’t function at its best.

Also, have you ever noticed how much hungrier you feel after a restless night? Lack of sleep wreaks havoc on appetite regulating hormones. To speed up your metabolism, try to get the same amount of sleep every night—it’s simply not possible to “catch-up” on the weekends.

Tip #4 – Drink Water

If you need another reason to add “drinking water” to your to do list – this is it.

Drinking water has been shown to boost metabolism by 10-30% for a whole hour after drinking up!  This means more fat-burning just by hydrating.

Plus, water fills you up, so if you’re craving something sweet, drink an 8-ounce glass water with some fresh fruit mixed in.  Use a cool water bottle with markings to keep you on track.  You’ll satisfy your cravings and feel full too!

Tip #5 – Drink Green Tea

Green tea contains about 10 times the amount of antioxidants as fruits and vegetables. By drinking green tea, you’re taking in antioxidants that will help detox your cells and boost your metabolism by 10-20%!

I recommend drinking 3-4 cups of green tea per day to get all metabolism and life-boosting benefits. One trick that helps is to steep 2 teabags in one cup; that way you get the benefits of two cups in one, and you don’t have to walk around all day with a teacup in your hand!

Take these 5 tips and make them a daily routine to help you lose weight, keep it off, and increase your energy.

  1. 17 day was great got off 53#’s 6 weeks ago got sugar cravings back out of control gained back 11#’s try sugar solotuion? been reading up on hidden sugars. yours was the first change that lasted for me and I had results. throid always been low so hypo not hyper. do fast and try 1st phase andstill craving sugar!! any suddgestions go to endronologist in 2 weeks.

    • Hi Kathy – thanks for reading the blog! The serving sizes are all after cooking the food. So, it would be 1/4 cup of cooked oats.
